Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
The only published novel by Emily Bronte, Wuthering Heights is the haunting story of the passionate love between the tortured Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, the daughter of Heathcliff’s benefactor. First published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, Wuthering Heights was remarkable for its unflinching and honest portrayal of obsessive love and its accompanying cruelty, which was out of character for novels of the era. Today, Wuthering Heights is considered to be a classic of English literature and has been adapted widely for the stage and screen.
Wuthering Heights is a well written novel by Emily Bronte. Although it is a popular book now, it was first doubted when published in 1847. Bronte was born in 1818, but only managed to have one novel published in her name. Bronte’s novel is a well known love story between Cathy and Headcliff. To start off, Headcliff is hurt by the loss of his love Catherine and the abuse of his stepbrother, Hindley. He then sets out to get Edgar Linton whom had been married to Catherine. The journey of this novel continues through letters written by Cathy that are read by Headcliff.
I found Wuthering Heights very interesting because of how it was written. It has a complicated plot which made it more interesting to read. The journals written by Cathy are written so you have to think about what is happening in the book. You also must figure out who is against whom. From the beginning, the characters were already in a mess so that you sat on the edge of your seat as you read on. For example, Cathy gets married to Edgar Linton while Headcliff and Cathy are really falling in love.
Overall, I felt that this novel was written very well but there are a few weaknesses in it. First, it was confusing how the text would go back and fourth so that it was hard to figure out who was talking. Second, in the beginning it was difficult to set straight why the characters were against each other in some cases. Finally I felt that in the middle of the novel it tended to bore me. Chapters would go on with nothing new being revealed in some scenarios.
Overall, I felt that despite its weaknesses that Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte was a great book. This deep novel really gets into how a pairs true love story had been settled. It also was a novel that I felt many people can relate to in different ways. This book is great for anyone who enjoys reading romantic or complicated but meaningful stories.
